Does Satan rule the world? so many people have been deceived by the answer to this question, but I pray that the Holy Spirit opens the eyes of our understanding to fathom the truth in this sermon in Jesus name. Amen.

On hearing the question above, many will immediately answer “yes!”, and rush to give biblical proof in the following scriptures:

We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one. (1 John 5:19).

‘Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. (John 12:31).

“I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in me. (John 14:30)

“Of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. (John 16:11).

But in order to properly understand how Satan rules the world, we must first and foremost survey Genesis where we will find out how he tricked the first humans, Adam and Eve, into going against God’s command not to eat of the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil in the garden.

Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “has God indeed said, ‘you shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?” and the woman said to the serpent, “we may eat the fruits of the trees of the garden; “but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said., ‘you shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die. Then the serpent said to the woman, ‘you will not surely die.’” “for God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasing to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves covering. (Genesis 3:1-7)

And after doing so they inherited the curse that came with that disobedience.

In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for dust you are, and to dust you shall return. (Genesis 3:19)

Now going to Revelation we will discover how Satan was cast out of heaven to earth on a mission to make war with the believers.

(This war being his same old method of deceit to make human beings disobey God).

So the great dragon was cast out, the serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast out to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. (Revelation 12:9, 17).

In the book of John, Jesus made it known to us that Satan is the father of all evil, a murderer who opposes the truth.

You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. (John 8:44)

The truth here means the word of God.

Sanctify them by your truth. Your word is truth” (John 17:17)

In Ephesians 6:12, the scripture clearly shows us how Satan rules the world.

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. (Ephesians 6:12).

And in Ephesians 2:1-3, we discover that trespasses or sin, also called disobedience, is the course of the world generated by Satan.

And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.

If we deeply study the last two passages above, we will finally understand that when the other scriptures were referring to Satan as the ruler of the world, it did not mean that he controls the affairs of the world, but that he rules over everything evil and wicked which abides not in heaven but in the world (flesh).

The scripture even shows us in the book of Colossians that God through Christ is the creator of everything in existence, both the seen and unseen including Satan:

For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers, all things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. (Colossians 1:16-17)

How then can God, who knows that Satan is out to turn human beings against Him, leave the world for him to rule; if such a thing should happen I assure you that the world will be a desert in just one second for Satan is like a thief, and:

“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. (John 10:10).

Finally, permit me to reveal to you that Satan is just an instrument or tool used by God, either to test the godly as we see in the case of Job in Job 1:6-12.

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them. And the LORD said to Satan, “from where do you come?” so Satan answered the LORD and said, “from going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.” Then the LORD SAID TO Satan, “have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil?” so Satan answered the LORD and said, “does Job fear God for nothing? “have you not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. “but now stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely curse You to Your face!” and the LORD said to Satan, “behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand on his person.” So Satan went out of the presence of the LORD.

(I wonder how Satan whom so many claim is ruling the world be a wanderer: going to and fro, back and forth on the earth)

God also uses Satan to punish the ungodly, as we see an illustration given of him as the king of Assyria in Isaiah 10:5-15

“Woe to Assyria, the rod of My anger and the staff in whose hand is My indignation. I will send him against an ungodly nation, and against the people of My wrath I will give him charge to seize the spoil, to take the prey, and to tread them down like mire of the streets.

And since the tool has no knowledge of who is using it, so also is Satan deprived of the knowledge that he is used by God.

Yet he does not mean so, nor does his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy, and cut off not a few nations. For he says, ‘are not my princes altogether kings? Is not Calno like Carchemish? Is not Hamath like Arpad? Is not Samaria like Damascus? As my hand has found the kingdom of the idols, whose carved images excelled those of Jerusalem and Samaria. As I have done to Samaria and her idols, shall I not do also to Jerusalem and her idols?’”

When God is done using him, He will finally give him the punishment of everlasting torment because of his pride:

Therefore it shall come to pass, when the LORD has performed all his work on Mount Zion and Jerusalem, that He will say, “I will punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his haughty looks.” For he says: “by the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I am prudent; also I have removed the boundaries of the people, and have robbed their treasuries; so I have put down the inhabitants like a valiant man. My hand has found like a nest the riches of the people, and as one gathers eggs that are left, I have gathered all the earth; and there was no one who moved his wing nor opened his mouth with even a peep.”

Because without God controlling Satan he is unable to do anything on earth:

Shall the ax boast itself against him who chops with it? Or shall the saw exalt itself against him who saws with it/ as if a rod could wield itself against those who lift it up, or as if a staff could life up, as if it were not wood?
