In the bible, speaking in tongues is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit which has been abused so much.

Occult grandmasters, parading as clergies; will recite incantations while praying, and also use it to perform miracles; all in the name of speaking in tongues as in the bible.

To achieve the aim of this sermon, we are going to see why the apostles spoke in tongues in the bible, before we move on to see the real meaning and rules of tongues in the bible.

Why the apostles spoke in tongues in the bible.

tongues in the bible

The main reason why the apostles spoke in tongues, when they first received the Holy Spirit, was to make people of different cultures understand what they were saying.

Which goes to prove that tongues in reality are the languages of different tribes and races.

Let’s outline that passage for a clearer understanding.

The origin of tongues in the bible.

And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues; as the Spirit gave them utterance.

And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men; from every nation under heaven.

And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together; and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language.

Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “look, are not all these who speak Galileans? “And how is that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? ‘Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia.

“Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, ‘Cretans and Arabs-we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.”

(Acts 2: 4-11)

The real meaning of tongues in the bible.

tongues in the bible

From this passage, we can understand that tongues is another word for language: It can mean an earthly or heavenly language.

So Paul took the time in 1 Corinthians 14 to explain and make us really get the understanding of what tongues really mean in the bible. .

Speaking in tongues as a personal communication with God.

For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however in the spirit he speaks mysteries. (Verse 2)

And it is the spirit that prays, which makes it hard for the individual to understand.

For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful (Verse 14).

The rules of tongues in the bible.

tongues in the bible

If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret. But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in church , and let him speak to himself and to God.

1 Corinthians 14: 27-28.

In the above biblical passage, Paul strongly advises us to desist from using tongues in the church, unless of course there is someone who will interpret to the people what the tongue utters.

Which goes to say that, the rules of tongues in the bible is that no one should speak it in the church congregation. Unless otherwise there is someone to give a proper interpretation of the tongues.

Conclusion.

In conclusion, we can see in the bible that speaking in tongues should be a private matter; and not something to be used while in the midst of others unless otherwise there is an interpreter.
