It is the word of God that brought everything into existence, so in this sermon, we are going to see how the word of God is life.
Which scripture says the word of God is life?
“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. (John 6:63).
The Word of God is life.
The word of God is life means that it was the spoken word of God that brought everything into existence as we can see an example in Genesis 1:3: And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
Also when a human being is able to study and understand the word of God, he will obey and keep it, knowing that before God tells us the things we should not do, He already knows the repercussions that come with doing those things.
And if we are able to obey His instructions, then we will definitely escape those repercussions and in so doing not meet with disaster that may claim our lives.
In John 1:1-5, the scripture shows us that in the beginning the word was with God and the word was God. That it was through Him that everything was made, and there is nothing that was made without the Word.
In Proverbs 4:20-22, the wise preacher advises his son to incline his ears to his sayings and never let them depart from his eyes but keep them in the midst of his heart.
Because if he is able to do so, they will bring life to those who find it and health to all flesh.
Now before we can understand how the word of God brings life to men, let us see how it brought life to things during creation.
How the word of God gives life.
The word of God gives life when anything that listens to it is able to obey Him.
The Holy Bible opens with a brief description of how the world was before the beginning.
It analysis that the earth was without form and void, and darkness covered the face of the deep.
And the first thing that God created was light.
Now the most important point to draw from this scripture is that God did not put this and that to create the light, rather He said “Let there be light”; and there was light.
Let there be light now was God’s word that swung into action and brought forth light.
And what we must note here is that the light obeyed the word of God, that was why it came forth.
The creation of man.
And after the light was created the same “let there be” brought every other creation forth until it came time for the creation of humans, God then went down to work with His hands.
As evidenced in Genesis 2:7, the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathe the breath of life into his nostrils for him to become a living soul.
But before God created man he first said “Let us make man in our own image and likeness” (Genesis 1:26).
Now that was the power of the spoken word that gives life to all things. That is to say, it is the same word that moved God to create human beings.
And immediately after creating him, He also used the word to establish man as He instructs him on how to live in the Garden of Eden. (Genesis 2:15-17).
The Fall of Man and the Consequence.
And as the story, which we all know goes; the man was unable to keep these words because he went ahead to eat that fruit and in so doing inherited the curse to die.
At first, he could live close to a thousand years: (So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years, and he died. (Genesis 5:5)
But since he grew more and more stubborn, his age was reduced to one hundred and twenty: (And the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his age shall be one hundred and twenty years.” (Genesis 6:3).
And as God saw that man will never cease to be stubborn, He finally reduced his life span to seventy or eighty if he is strong: The days of our lives are seventy years; if by reason of strength they are eighty years, yet their boost is only labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. (Psalms 90:10)
And as evidenced from the above scripture the seventy years life span is still being accompanied by every kind of misery.
But again when we look around we find out that some people are not even able to make it to this seventy.
In fact, many lives are even gone before they even start; some through abortion, some stillbirth, and a lot more are offered as a sacrifice while the other unfortunate ones struggle to make it to their tens, twenties, thirties, forties, fifties, and sixties before they are gone without living up to the stipulated age that God kept for them.
And all these happen because man is still unable to keep the words of God.
And you might say that many that die before their time are innocent for instance the infants who are aborted, but then your mind has deceived you because you should have known that if the mother of that child had kept the word of God, she wouldn’t have committed the sin of fornication which got her pregnant.
Beloved, I want to let you know that if someone’s own sin does not kill him before his time, then the sin of another person will surely do.
Because a witch or occultist will definitely sacrifice a fellow human being in his coven, an armed robber will definitely take away the life of his victim untimely, a murderer will not kill a ghost of the tree but his fellow human being, and so on and so forth.
What happens when we keep God’s Word?
At this point, you can now see with me that if all human beings will listen to God’s words and keep them, they would not put themselves in a position of dying or being the cause of another person’s death when they are not yet between seven years and one hundred and twenty that God kept for us.
And when we look around we observe that the very earth which God did not even create in His image, is able to live longer than human beings who are his image.
Moreover, other things on earth for example trees in the forest live much longer, not even to mention the sun and moon which are the product of light, the first thing that God created, which has never ever died.
So we begin to ponder within ourselves asking: why is this so? And the scripture provides an answer for us right away.
Forever, O LORD, your word is settled in heaven. Your faithfulness endures to all generations; you established the earth, and it abides. They continue this day according to Your ordinances. For all are Your servants. (Psalms 119:89-91).
So since these creatures are able to become the servants of God, by carrying out the instructions He gave to them after their creation, they are able to live longer.
And if human beings would imitate them then they would be able to complete their stipulated lifetime and even get extras as we evidence in some who are able to live beyond a hundred and twenty years old.
And at this point let me answer the two questions that might linger in some people’s minds, I mean those who think they are wiser than God Who revealed this mystery through My Master Jesus Christ for us.
Why the wicked lives longer.
The wicked lives longer because God is giving them enough time to repent so that they won’t have what to say and defend themselves on judgment day:
“Do I have any pleasure at all that the wicked should die?” says the LORD God, “and not that he should turn from his ways and live? (Ezekiel 18:23).
The fate of those killed by the wicked.
The wicked are instruments used by God to destroy those who disobey Him.
“woe to Assyria, the rod of My anger and the staff in whose hand is My indignation. I will send him against an ungodly nation, and against the people of My wrath I will give him charge to seize the spoil, to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets. (Isaiah 10:5-6)
And those righteous whom they peradventure killed were just being relieved of their earthly duty which was done so they could go and have their rest.
Then I heard a voice from heaven saying to me, “write: ‘blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.’ “Yes,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow them. (Revelation 14:13)
Conclusion.
Finally, you would find out that the earth is able to last this long because they had an agreement with God to give the world light.
And as we can see in the next text those who obey God are able to enter into an agreement of not only living to fulfill God’s purpose but having uncountable descendants as He did with David and the Levites:
‘thus says the LORD: ‘ if you can break My covenant with the day and My covenant with the night, so that there will not be day and night in their season, then My covenant may also be broken with David My servant, so that he shall not have a son to reign on his throne, and with the Levites, the priests, My ministers. ‘as the host of heaven cannot be numbered, nor the sand of the sea measured, so will I multiply the descendants of David My servant and the Levites who minister to Me.’” (Jeremiah 33:19-22)
