(Genesis 17:1-2)

Our topic for today.

In our scriptural text for the word of God today March 21 2022, we see how God promised to make a covenant with Abraham if only he would walk blamelessly before Him.

Before we see what was the covenant God made with Abraham, let us see the meaning of a covenant.

What is a covenant?

A covenant is a pact or binding agreement between two parties, and in the biblical context it is usually between God and man.

The covenant between God and Abraham.

The Bible records God’s covenant between Abraham in Genesis 15.

From that scripture we realize that Abraham was approaching 100 years of age and was still childless.

He was worried that his slave, Eliezer of Damascus was going to be his heir.

But God told him such will not happen rather He is going to give him a son who is going to be an heir.

To ascertain the covenant, God made Abraham to offer a sacrifice of three-year old heifer, three-year-old female goat, three-year-old ram, a turtledove and a young pigeon.

And immediately Abraham finished offering that sacrifice, God caused a deep sleep to come over him and showed him the future in a dream.

Finally, the purpose of a covenant is usually for God to establish a human race.

In the case of Abraham, God established the Jewish race that later metamorphosed to the modern Christianity through him.
