In this sermon, we are going to look at the power of the tongue in the bible.
While waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and the final judgment, there is one organ in our body we must guide so much.
Because, it is by this organ we will be judged by the things we use it to do.
This organ is small but performs mighty works; it is both able to build and at the same time destroy, it is called THE TONGUE.
Let us go to the scripture to see what this organ can do:
Bible verse about the tongue.
For we all stumble in many things, if anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.
Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body.
Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things.
See how great a forest little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity.
The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind.
But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who has been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing.
My brethren these things ought not to be so.
(James 3:2-10)
The power of the tongue in the bible.

Now from the above scripture, we can see what great power this little organ has.
First we see that, why bits are put in horses’ mouth is so that the horse can obey the rider.
And he can then control it to take him to wherever he goes.
Also as in the case of the ship, whose rudder is small but turns the ship to wherever the pilot wants.
Therefore if we apply the same rules to our tongue, i.e. learn to be mindful, as well as watch what we use our tongue to say; we will then be able to control our entire body.
We see another example where the tongue is also likened to a little fire that consumes a great forest. But sad enough, man who has been able to control other great creatures is unable to control his little tongue.
And at the end of that scripture we discover that, the tongue serves two purposes i.e. it can be used to achieve good and do evil, example blessing God and cursing men.
And so the question you ought to ask yourself now is:
What purpose do you use your own tongue for?

Do you use it to bless God and afterwards curse men who are the very image of the same God you used it to bless?
Does a brother or sister end up killing a fellow human being just because you falsely said something that you were not supposed to say?
For instance, I heard of a step brother who used juju to kill his step mother and brothers, simply because the wife of one of the brothers told the step brother that the step mother had concluded plans to make the father will everything he has to her own children; and throw him out of his inheritance as the overall first born.
And the painful part of this story was that the step mother and the step son were so fond of each other before this incidence occurred.
Worst of all, the step mother had no such plans to cheat the step son out of his inheritance.
But see what great destruction the tongue caused!
The power of death and life is in the tongue.
That is why the scripture shows us that; the power of death and life lies in this very little but mighty organ.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.
(Proverbs 18:21)
And our Lord Jesus showed us that, evil people will never say anything good; because, whatsoever we say comes from our hearts.
Final judgement shall be based on how you used your tongue.
And He concluded that our final judgment shall be based on what we used our respective tongues to say.
“Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. ‘But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. ‘For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
(Mathew 12: 34, 36, 37)
Conclusion.

Finally, we can come to the understanding why God, of all other organs in the body; placed two security (the teeth and the lips) on this little but mighty organ called the TONGUE.
So if you make use that security, you will definitely save yourself out of so many troubles; and moreover escape the judgment of God.
