- Instruction in righteousness: The word of God is a great way for humans to know how to do the things that are right and shun the ones that are wrong.
2. Faith.
In Romans 10:17, the Bible shows us that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.
Now knowing that faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen, we understand that seeing the promises in the word of God will make us wait for it knowing that it will surely come to pass.
3. Guidance and direction.
Isaiah 30:21, the scripture says that God will show you the way to go because your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.
In 1 Chronicles 10:13 we see how Saul died because he was unfaithful to the LORD; he did not keep the word of God and even consulted a medium for guidance.
4. Truth.
It is from the word of God that we will know the truth as Jesus reveals in John 17:17 that the word of God is truth.
In Psalm 119:160 the Bible further reveals that the sum of God’s word is truth, therefore, we must not fail to believe every thing that God has said in His word because it is nothing but the truth.
5. Eternal life.
In John 5:24 our Lord Jesus says: “Whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life!”
Thus, the word of God is able to give eternal life to those who believe it.
6. Helps us fight against sin.
In Psalm 119:11, the psalmist says: “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you”.
Thus, so long as we have the word of God living in our hearts, it will help us to fight against every form of sin.
7. Defends our spirit.
In Ephesians 6:17, the scripture reveals that the word of God is the sword of the spirit, and this means that the word of God is capable to defend our spirit from the wars waged against us by the devil and his agents.
Remember, we are not wrestling against flesh and blood but against the powers and principalities in high places as the Bible shows us in Ephesians 6:12.
8. Provides salvation.
In James 1:21, the scripture says: “So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls”.
As we can see, the word of God has the power to provide salvation to those who hear and believe in it.
9. Gives food to the spirit.
The physical food is vital for the sustenance of human life because without having the proper nutrients to nourish the body, it becomes weak and malfunctions. Thus people need to eat the right food to keep their bodies nourished so it could function properly.
Now this same principle is needed for our spiritual lives if we also want it to function properly. We need a spiritual food that will nourish our spirit so we do not become weak and weary in doing the work of God
Our Lord Jesus made an emphasis on the importance of spiritual food when the devil tempted Him to turn stone to bread after His forty days and forty nights fasting. So in Mathew 4:4 He tells the devil :man shall nt live by bread alone, but nby every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.
And as we can see from the words of Jesus, the spiritual food we need for our spirit is every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.
On several other occasions, Jesus made mention of other types of spiritual food. In John 4:32, his disciples brought Him some food from the town and He refused to eat it saying “I have food to eat that you know nothing about”.
And in verse 34 He explains: “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work”
After feeding the 5,000 in John 6:54-55 Jesus makes reference to faith, salvation and His death on the cross using a food metaphor: “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink”
In several other places, the scripture makes reference to the kinds of spiritual food we need as we can ee below:
- Milk 1 Peter 2:2.
- Bread Deuterenomy 8:3, Job 23:12.
- Meat 1 Corinthians 3:2.
- Honey Psalm 119:103
We need food for our spirit, that is to say we need the Word of God, we need to do the will of God.
10. Lights the human path.
In Psalm 119:105 the scripture reveals that the word of God is a lamp unto the human feet and a light unto His path.
When we know the word of God and practice it, we will never falter into darkness because it will shine the way for us to go through life.
11. Hope.
The Lord declares in Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope”.
12. Joy.
The word if God is capable of bringing joy to mankind as i clearly states in Jeremiah 15:16. “Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name, O Lord, God of hosts”.
13. Freedom.
In John 8:32, the scripture says that we shall know the truth and the truth will make us free. And going to John 17:17 we discover how Jesus said that the word of God is truth.
So we discover that Jesus was telling ius to study the word of God to discover the truth that will bring freedom to us. Thus the word of God gives freedom indeed.
14. Comfort in affliction.
The Bible provides humankind with comfort in affliction as it reveals in Psalm 119:50: “This is my comfort in my affliction, That Your word has revived me”.
15. Counselling.
In Psalm 119:24 the Psalmist reveals that the word of God is his delight because they are his counselors.
There is no situation in life that any human bing will encounter without seeing a way out of it from the Bible. Thus, we must always learn how to use the Bible in counseling bth ourselves and our fellow Chrisians, especially in times of great challenges.
16. Humility.
We discover from the word of God, precisely in James 4:10 that if we humble ourselves the Lord will lift us up at the right time.
In Isaiah 14:12-15, we see how Lucifer fell from his position of grace because he became proud and boastful. He went as far as attempting to establish himself above the One Who created him.
Lucifer’s example as seen from the word of God will therefore help us to humble ourselves so as to avoid falling as he did
17. Serves as an example.
Everything that transpired in the past and was recorded in the scripture was meant to serve as an example to mankind from generation to ggeneration.
In 1 Corinthians 10:1-10, we see what befell the children of Israel because of their disobedience and the Bible maintains in verse 10 that “all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come“.
18. Wisdom and understanding.
When we are able to study the word of God with the Spirit of God, we will be able to gain perfect wisdom and understanding of what God requires from us here on earth.
In Psalm 119:130, the scripture reveals that the explanation of the word of God brings wisdom and understanding to those who are ignorant.
19. Helps us to know God.
How else would we have known God as our creator and the source of all things if not through His word.
In several passages of the scripture, God reveals Himself to us perfectlyy and examples are shown below:
- Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself; (Isaiah 44:24).
- For your Maker is your husband— the LORD Almighty is his name— the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth. (Isaiah 54:5).
20. Peace.
The Bible says in Psalm 85:8: “Let me hear what the Lord God says, because he speaks peace to his people and to his faithful ones.” The Good News: When in doubt, pray and read the Lord’s word. What He says will always help bring about peace in your life.
What more can I say?
21. Patience.
In the word of God we will discover how long men of God had to wait before they were able to obtain whatever the Lord promised them.
Our fore-father Abraham had to wait till a hundred years before he could father the child that God promised him.
If Isaac was not patient, he wouldn’t have been able to work for 14 years before he could get Rachel.
Now the fact remains that God did not fail to fulfill whatrever He promised to His people in the Bible no matter how long it took.
This knowledge from the word of God will therefore help us to exercise patient and wai on God to fulfill whatever we expect from Him.
22. Long life.
Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many. Says the word of God in Proverbs 4:10.
Now how does the word of God give us long life?
When we are abl to carry out the instructions we see in the word of od, it will help us to escape every actions that might have shorten our lifespan.
For example, we understand through the word of God that we should not steal, and we hearken to that word we will avoid stealing and getting killed or locked up when we are caught.
23. Safety
Every word of God is tested; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. (Proverbs 30:5)
24. Helps us to overcome temptations.
When we study the temptations of Jesus as recorded in Mathew 3:1-10, we will discover that Jesus was able to overcome the devil through the word of God.
And what’s worst? the devil himself also quoted the word of God to confuse or convince Jesus as he did to Adam and Eve in the garden.
25. Shows us how to become successful.
In Mathew 24:14-30, Jesus relates a parable of the talent where a certain master gives talents to his servants before he travels.
The first and the second servants who received five and two talents respectiely invested and made profits while the third servant who received one talent went and hi d it
When the master returned from his trip and asked the three servants to bring the talents, the two who invested and made profitts were rewarded while the one who hid and returned the one talent given to him was cast out.
This parable in the word of God teaches us how to invest so we can become successful in life.
