Is Evangelism A Spiritual Gift?

Is Evangelism A Spiritual Gift

In 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, the Bible lists out varieties of gifts that the Holy Spirit gives to people in order to help them function for the common good of the body of Christ.

Now let’s review that Bible passage to help us understand the point I am trying to make here.

There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

As we’ve seen from the above scriptures, we can deduce the following as spiritual gifts in the Bible:

  1. Wisdom.
  2. Knowledge.
  3. Faith.
  4. Healing.
  5. Working of miracles.
  6. Prophecy.
  7. Descenment.
  8. Speaking in tongues.
  9. Interpretation of tongues.

In the above list, there is no mention of evangelism as a spiritual gift, so this then raises the question: is evangelism a spiritual gift?

And that question is why I am writing this religious discourse, which if you read it to the end you will get the answer with Biblical references as proof.

After answering this question, I will also move on to show you the role of spiritual gifts in evangelism as well as how to know if you have the spiritual gift of evangelism.

So without any further ado, let us get started right away.

Is evangelism a spiritual gift?

Evangelism is a spiritual gift because as we can see in Ephesians 4:11 God gave gifts to people and appointed some of them to be evangelists, and evangelism is a spiritual gift that is given to these evangelists.

And in verses 12 the Bible goes on to show that God gave the spiritual gift of evangelism to evangelists to prepare God’s people for the work of Christian service which will help build up the body of Christ.

When you study the disciples’ lives after they received the Holy Spirit, you will discover that they did not entertain any form of fear as they used to when they did not yet receive the Holy Spirit.

For example, in Luke 22:54-62, we can see how Peter denied Jesus three consecutive times when the Jews tried to identify him as one of those who was always seen with Jesus Christ. But in Acts chapters 3 and 4, we can see how the same Peter boldly declared himself to be a disciple of Christ, even when they were arrested and brought before the council.

Now let’s move on from here to see the role of the spiritual gifts in evangelism.

The role of spiritual gifts in evangelism.

The role of spiritual gifts in evangelism is to empower the evangelist to bear witness of or preach the gospel message of the Lord Jesus Christ across the whole world.

That is why the Lord Jesus commanded his disciples in Acts 1:8 to go and wait in Jerusalem until they receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon them, because it is that power that will enable them to bear witness for him starting in Jerusalem to Judea, and to Samaria and the outermost part of the earth.

The second role of spiritual gifts in evangelism is to give the evangelist the wisdom to decipher and impact the truth in the word of God to others. This is according to what the Lord Jesus promised in John 16:12-13:

“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

Another role of spiritual gifts in evangelism is to enable the evangelist predict the future as we can see in the Bible passage above.

How to know if you have the spiritual gift of evangelism.

The ability to preach the gospel without fear at any given time or place is the only way for you to know if you have the spiritual gift of evangelism.

Evangelism is not something you can do carnally because if it were to be so, God would not have sent the Holy Spirit to enable us to do the work of evangelism.

I began doing my job of an evangelist using open air preaching as my type or method of evangelism, and I have had both spiritual and physical attacks in the course of preaching the gospel in open spaces. But one thing I have always observed is that I have never been afraid, even for once, while am out there preaching the word of God.

And this is all because I have always been empowered by the Holy Spirit anytime I am out there to preach.

Another way to know if you have the spiritual gift of evangelism is is the knowledge and wisdom to explain the word of God anytime you are preaching.

I am always fond of using my phone to record myself preaching, and one thing I always discover when I play back the recording is the things I discover myself saying, even though I never planned to do so.

How to receive the spiritual gifts of evangelism.

To receiev the spiritual gifts of evangelism, you must repent and be baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins in order to receive the Holy Spirit who is the giver of the spiritual gifts.

This is according to what the Bible says in Acts 2:38 about how to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

And as it further assure in verse 39, these gifts is for everyone all over the world, as many as the Lord Jesus Christ is going to call.
