It is so unfortunate how the modern day Christianity has made so many to believe that being an evangelist can only be manifested through ordination in any church denomination.
Some of the churches will ensure that those who have the zeal of becoming an evangelist go through some form of training in a Bible college or class before they are officially ordained and given certificates. While others choose some of their active members to ordain them as evangelist.
And what bothers m the most is that most of these so called evangelist in various Christian denominations do not know that their job as evangelist is to go into the world and preach the gospel to all mankind as the Lord Jesus Christ commanded in Mark 16:15.
Their only duty then is to attend church services on Sundays and sit in their respective positions on the pulpit while the so-called pastor is the one to carry out the work of preaching the gospel as an evangelist.
For this reason, I am writing this sermon to help you understand how to know if you are an evangelist if you have been nursing the zeal of ever becoming an evangelist. Once you are able to discover if you are truly an evangelist by calling, you can then follow the steps that will help you to become a successful evangelist.
So without wasting any more time, let us get straight into this religious discourse.
How to know if you are an evangelist.
Below are the steps you need to follow if you want to know if you are an evangelist:
- Pray and seek God’s approval.
- Study the Bible with understanding.
- Preach the gospel to others.
- Attend a Bible school or class.
- Get mentorship.
1. Pray and seek God’s approval.
The very first step you must take to know if you are an evangelist is to pray and seek approval from God.
Now since it is a fact that God will not appear to give you any response, you can ask him for the signs that will help you to knwwo if you ever have the call to serve as an evangelist in his vineyard.
You can then implement the remaining steps below that will draw you closer to this great discovery.
2. Study the Bible with understanding.
After praying and seeking God’s approval, the next step you must take that will help you to know if you are an evangelist is to study the Bible and see if you really understand it.
In 1 Corinthians 2:7, the scripture reveals that the Bible contains the wisdom of God which is hidden in mysteries, this therefore means that we must not take what the Bible says in it’s literal terms but rather must seek to discover the meaning behind it.
2 Peter 1:21 further reveals that the men of God who wrote the biblical prophecies did not do so by human wisdom or knowledge but rather as they were being inspired by the Holy Spirit.
This therefore means that all evangelist must depend on the Holy Spirit to enable them do the work of evangelism.
3. Preach the gospel to others.
Once you are able to understand the Bible, you will then put yourself in the position of being able to explain it to others as the Bible says in Psalm 119:130, that the explanation of God’s word brings wisdom to those who are ignorant.
There are several methods of types of evangelism that you can adopt to help you preach the gospel to others, you can even study the methods of evangelism that was used by the Lord Jesus Christ himself and implement some or most of them if you really want to know if you are an evangelist.
The ability to preach the gospel without fear is one of the things that will enable you to know if you are truly an evangelist.
4. Attend a Bible school or class.
In 2nd Timothy 2:15, the apostle Paul advised evangelist Timothy to “study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needed not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth”.
I believe it is this inciting passage that gave birth to Bible school and classes in Christendom.
When you attend a Bible school or class, you will have the opportunity to learn from those who have been inspired by the Holy Spirit to study and understand the Bible.
5. Get mentorship.
Mentorship is the process where you are being trained under someone who is superior and has had so much experience in the field you have chosen as a career, and in evangelism it is one of the ways you can get to know if you are truly an evangelist.
The greatest example of mentorship in the Bible is that of the apostle Paul and Timothy, and when you read through the first and second letters Paul wrote to Timothy, you will discover the instructions, advises, encouragement etc. that he gave to him.
What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. 1Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.
On several occasions, he used himself to set an example for Timothy to emulate.
You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings—what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
Thus, having a mentor like the apostle Paul will go a long way to help you discover your calling in evangelism.
