In this sermon, we are really going to lay emphasis on how to break generational curses and covenants.
But there is no way we are going to understand how to break generational curses and covenants if we fail to understand the definitions of both curses and covenants; especially according to the bible.
We are also going to look at the relationship between curses and covenants, how the breaking of covenants leads to curses, the signs of covenants as well as examples of curses and covenants in the bible.
We are finally going to conclude this sermon by showing us the ways or simply how to break curses and covenants.
What are curses and covenants?
To better understand what is curses and covenants, let us try to define them separately.
What is the biblical meaning of curses?
According to the bible in Genesis 3:14-19, we can see how God placed a curse on the serpent and our first parents, Adam and Eve.
To the serpent, He said, “you alone of all the animals shall bear this curse; from now on you will crawl on your belly, and eat dust all the days of your life.”
“I will make you and the woman hate each other, and both your children and hers shall be enemies.”
To the woman, He said, “I will increase your trouble in pregnancy and pains in giving birth, and still with that, you will desire for your husband and remain subjected to him.”
And He finally said to the man “since you listened to your wife and ate the fruit I told you not to, a curse is upon the ground for your sake.
You will have to work very hard before it produces what you will eat and sustain life; until you return to the dust you were taken from.”
Now as we can see, every curse on the snake; woman, and the bed bends towards miseries in whatever form or manner.
And from this knowledge, we can define a curse according to the bible as the process where God pronounces and brings great evil upon an animal or person.
Now let’s go on to define covenants before we can now get to see the full biblical meaning of generational curses and covenants.
What is the biblical meaning of covenants?
When we go to Genesis 2:15, we can see how God placed man in the garden of Eden after his creation.
He instructed him to eat all the fruits in the garden; except the tree that gives knowledge of good and evil.
Adam had no choice but to agree to God’s bidding, and it is that agreement we understand today as covenants.
Therefore, we can say that the biblical meaning of covenants is an agreement or pact made between God and human beings.
The definition of curses and covenants according to the bible.
From the knowledge we have gained so far, we can therefore define curses and covenants according to the bible as the pronouncement of great evil upon an animal or human because they cannot keep the agreement they had with God.
What are generational curses and covenants according to the bible?
According to the bile in Exodus 34:6-7, God made the following pronouncement: “the LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth. ‘keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.
Therefore, generational curses and covenants simply mean the sins and their punishments that God transfers from the parents to the children, and even down to the third and fourth generations.
An example can be seen in the curses placed upon the snake and our first parents, Adam and Eve.
Till today, the snake is still crawling on its stomach.
The woman is still going through trouble in pregnancy and pains in childbirth.
And man is still tilling the ground in order to produce what they must eat and sustain life. Finally, death comes knocking, and we all return to the dust from which we were taken.
Thus, the curse upon Adam and Eve is generational in the whole human race.
Now let’s move on to see some of the examples of generational curses and covenants in the bible.
Example of generational curses and covenants in the bible.
1. Moses’s anger.
In Exodus 2:1-10, we discover that a Levite man and woman got married; and the marriage produced a son who was named Moses.
Genesis 34 records that after the rape of Jacob’s daughter, Dinah, by Schechem, Hamor’s son.
His brothers Simeon and Levi slew all the male inhabitants in the land of Schechem; while they were still sour from their circumcision.
This circumcision was according to Schechem’s agreement to get married to Dinah after he raped her.
Now because of what Simeon and Levi did they inherited the cause below from their father Jacob.
“Simeon and Levi are brothers, instruments of cruelty are in their dwelling place. Let not my soul enter their council; let not my honor be united to their assembly; for in their anger they slew a man, and in their self-will they harm-strung an ox. Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce; and their wrath; for it is cruel! I will divide them in Jacob and scatter them in Israel.
Genesis 49:5-7.
And in Numbers 20:7-12, we see how the fierce anger, Moses inherited as a generational curse and covenant; prevented him from entering the promised land.
2. David’s adultery.
According to the bible in 2 Samuel chapter 11, David sleeps with Uriah’s wife, Bathseba; and finally succeeded in killing Uriah.
And in 2 Samuel 12:10-11 the Lord pronounces a curse through the prophet Nathan: Now therefore, the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.” ‘thus says the Lord: ‘behold I will raise up adversity against you from your own house, and I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun.
In 2 Samuel 13, we see how the curse begins to manifest when David’s son, Amnon rapes his step-sister Tamar.
And his brother Absolom kills Amnon in order to fulfill the curse that the sword shall never depart from David’s household.
In 2 Samuel 16:21-23, Absolom went in and sleeps with his father’s concubines to fulfill the curse “and I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun.“
Finally, we see how David lost Absolom, the son he loved most in 2 Samuel 18:9.
Now David’s generational curse continues in his lineage when Solomon disobeyed God and married foreign wives; to inherit a curse recorded in 1 Kings 11:11-13.
And in 1 Kings 12:1-19, the curse takes an effect; when the kingdom is divided during the reign of Solomon’s son Rehoboam
Relationship between curses and covenants.
Curses usually come as a result of breaking covenants.
Covenants are also known in the bible as a law or commandments, usually given by God.
And when we look into the case of Levi from whom Moses inherited a curse on his anger; we can see that God commanded the Israelites in Exodus 20:13 not to kill each other.
In David’s case, he broke God’s covenant which is said in Leviticus 18:20, “thou shall not lie with thy neighbour’s wife”.
Solomon broke the covenant in Deuteronomy 7:3 that forbids the Israelites not to intermarry with other tribes.
How to break generational curses and covenants.
According to the bible, the following ways can be seen how to break generational curses and covenants:
- Spotting and departing from the sins you see people committing so much in your lineage.
- Being washed and redeemed by the precious blood of Christ.
- Receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit.
1. Spotting and departing from the sins you see people committing so much in your lineage.
Ezekiel’s chapter 18 makes it clearer that the parents will no longer eat the grape and children receive the sour taste.
Meaning that God has abolished the idea of generational curses and covenants.
And from now henceforth, everyone is going to pay the price for their sins.
It goes on to say that supposing the parents were sinners, committing all kinds of sins outlined or not outlined in that scripture.
And the child sees and desists from it, that the parents are going to pay the price for that sin. While the child who avoids it will not inherit it as generational curses and covenants.
It also states that, supposing the parents were good people, and the child turns out evil; it is the child who is going to pay the price for his own sins.
2. Being washed and redeemed by the precious blood of Christ.
The Bible says in 1 Peter 1:18-19, that you were not redeemed from generational curses and covenants by corruptible things like silver or gold.
Rather, you were redeemed by the blood of Christ.
3. Receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit.
After the Holy Spirit came upon the apostles in Acts chapter 2, people saw the results.
They asked Peter what they must do to be saved and he told them in verses 38 and 39 to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus for the remission of sin, and they will receive the Holy Spirit.
The purpose of the Holy Spirit as we can see in Ezekiel 36:27 is to prevent the believer from committing sin.
