In Christendom, so many people believe that evangelism is a calling based on the fact that one needs to have the spiritual gift of evangelism before he can function properly.
On the flip side are also those who believe that they need some form of ordination or the laying on of hands and anointing by a more superior minister to become a successful evangelist.
I support the first idea because when you go to the scriptures, the apostle Paul points out in Galatians 1:1 that his call to be an evangelist did not come from man but directly from the Lord Jesus Christ.
I believe we all know the story of how Paul was converted on his way to Damascus to persecute the early Christians as recorded in Acts chapter 9.
However, whatever your belief of becoming a successful evangelist might have been, I am going to use my experience as an evangelist and the spirit of the Lord Jesus Christ to show you the things you need to do to become a successful evangelist in this religious discourse.
So without wasting any much time, let’s get started right away.
How to be a successful evangelist.
To be a successful evangelist you must ensure that you fast and pray often, study the Bible everyday, preach the word of God, attend a Bible school or class and get mentorship.
In other words, the 5 guidelines below will help you to become a successful evangelist.
- Fast and pray as often as you can.
- Study the Bible with understanding.
- Preach the word of God.
- Attend a Bible school or class.
- Get mentorship.
1. Fast and pray as often as you can.
Prayers and fasting are the 2 most powerful tools for evangelism and because of that you must emsure you pray and fast as often as you can if you want to be a successful evangelist.
Remember that it is through prayers that we can ask God for whatever we need and receive it, seek and find what we need as Jesus taught us in Mark 11:24.
Your main prayer point as an evangelist should be for God to empower you through the Holy Spirit to do the job of an evangelist.
This is because it is the Holy Spirit that enables us to function an do the work of evangelism.
In Acts 1:8, the Lord Jesus told the disciples that the will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon them and they will use that power to bear witness to him in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and the outermost part of the earth. He then gave them an instruction to go and wait in Jerusalem for the promise.
In Acts chapter 2, we can all see how the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples on the Pentecost Day, and that very day the work of evangelism began in Christianity.
Thus, without the power of the Holy Spirit there is no way you can become a successful evangelist and that is the reason why you must fast and pray often to receive it.
2. Study the Bible with understanding.
In 2 Peter 1:20-21, the Bible says that “no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit”.
Therefore, as an evangelist, you must always seek the Holy Spirit to help you study the Bible and gain full understanding so that you may be in a position to explain it accurately to others.
This is because it is through the proper explanation of the word of God that human beings will be able to put what they hear from it into practice.
In Psalm 119:34, the Psalmist sung: “explain your word to me and I will obey it, I will obey it with all my heart”. And in verse 130 it says that the explanation of God’s word gives wisdom to those who are ignorantly.
3. Preach the word of God.
Your main aim as an evangelist is to preach the word of God, and as Paul instructed Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:2-5, evangelists must preach the word of God in and out of season.
There are so many types of evangelism you can adopt to enable you to preach the word of God,, you can learn about them in the sermon below.
You can also read the sermon below to learn the methods of evangelism used by the Lord Jesus Christ himself.
What Was Jesus Method Of Evangelism?
4. Attend a Bible school or class.
In 2nd Timothy 2:15 the Bible says that you should study to show yourself approved, a servant of God rightly dividing the word of God. This therefore goes to show that education is very vital for evangelical success.
There are people that God has placed in strategic positions and given them the wisdom of rightly dividing his word to people’s understanding. And where you will find them are Bible school’s or classes, so you must go out now and search for them.
5. Get mentorship.
Since the advent of Christianity, mentorship has helped to shape many evangelists and enable them to function as they ought to.
In the Bible, Timothy and Titus were mentored by the apostles, and in their respective books or letters we can see the countless instructions that Paul gave to them, I believe that without these instructions, these two would have never been successful as evangelists during their time.
I believe there are still Christian mentors like Paul at this age, and you just need to pray and ask God to direct you to that person who will act as a mentor and help you succeed as an evangelist.
Final thought.
I really believe that following the above steps will help you to be a successful evangelist and you also need to share this sermon to help others who are also eager to become evangelist attain the success they need.
Remain blessed!
